7 Ways To Get Rid of That New Mattress Smell

A furniture store with a section of new mattresses. The new mattresses range in different sizes and colors.
Nothing compares to the excitement of a new mattress. But an unwelcome guest can dampen that excitement—the notorious new mattress smell. This off-gassing odor, caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the foam, adhesives, and other materials, can be quite off-putting. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to get rid of that new mattress smell.

1. Air Out the Mattress

The simplest fix is letting the mattress breathe. Remove any plastic covers and place the mattress in a well-ventilated room. Open windows and use fans to help circulate fresh air.

Within a few days, you should notice the smell fading away. If possible, leave the mattress outside in a shaded area for several hours; sunlight can help speed up the off-gassing process.

2. Use Baking Soda

Baking soda is a powerful odor eliminator. Sprinkle a generous amount over the surface of your mattress and leave it for at least 24 hours. The baking soda will absorb the VOCs and neutralize the smell. Afterward, vacuum the mattress thoroughly to remove all the baking soda.

3. Try Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is another effective solution for absorbing odors. You can purchase activated charcoal pads or bags and place them near or on top of your mattress.

These pads will absorb the VOCs. Leave them in place for a few days, and you should notice a significant reduction in odor.

4. Use White Vinegar

White vinegar is a natural deodorizer. Fill small bowls with white vinegar and place them around the room where your new mattress is airing out.

The vinegar will help to neutralize the off-gassing smells. Make sure the bowls are out of reach from pets and children, and replace the vinegar every 24 hours until the smell dissipates.

5. Seal the Mattress

Consider using a mattress protector to seal in any remaining odors. A high-quality, breathable protector helps contain off-gassing smells while simultaneously protecting your mattress from spills and stains. Ensure the protector is washable so you can clean it regularly to maintain a fresh sleeping environment.

6. Invest in Quality Mattresses

Not all mattresses are equal when it comes to off-gassing. Investing in a high-quality mattress from a reputable seller can make a big difference.

For example, a home furniture store like SuperNova Furniture offers comfortable new mattresses made from premium materials. These mattresses tend to have lower levels of VOCs and, therefore, less odor. Choosing a quality mattress ensures a better sleep experience from the start.

7. Consider Using Plants

Houseplants can also help you get rid of that new mattress smell. Snake plants, spider plants, and aloe vera help filter the air and absorb toxins.

Adding a few of these plants to your bedroom can improve air quality and reduce the lingering new mattress smell. Plus, they add a touch of greenery and serenity to your sleep space.

Whether you choose to simply air out the mattress or try any of the other methods, you can create a fresh and pleasant sleeping environment with these tips.
